The 80th Golden Globes 2023 Awards: The Highlights and Lowlights

Posted:

The Golden Globes 2023 Awards is one of the most prestigious events in the entertainment industry, bringing together some of the biggest stars in film and television. This year’s show was one of the most memorable yet, full of highlights and lowlights that made for an exciting and entertaining night.

In this blog post, we’ll take a look at the best and worst moments from the 80th Golden Globes Awards 2023 and discuss what made this event so memorable (or perhaps controversial).

Highlights

Passionate speeches from Ke Huy Quan, Angela Bassett, and Michelle Yeoh

Each actor spoke from the heart about the struggles of being an Asian-American immigrant in Hollywood. They discussed issues, such as racism in casting processes, cultural representation on television shows and films, and how these conversations need to be had more frequently for true change to occur.

Colin Farrell’s acceptance speech

Farrell’s speech for his award in the Best Actor Musical or Comedy category (The Banshees of Inisherin) was a celebration of stories about “the flawed, the forgotten, and misunderstood.” He spoke about how every individual story holds within it a powerful lesson on being human that can be shared with future generations.

Quinta Brunson’s speech

Brunson’s speech upon receiving her award in the Best Actress Musical or Comedy category focused on themes like self-expression and embracing our differences to understand one another better.

Drunken speeches from Mike White, Guillermo del Toro, and (probably) Jennifer Coolidge

It’s a trio of actors who have mastered the art of delivering an off-the-cuff speech under pressure and with that unmistakable bit of intoxication from celebratory drinks.

Ryan Murphy’s moving acceptance speech

The multi-talented director and producer received the Carol Burnett Award for his exceptional career in television, film, and theater. Murphy spoke passionately about his journey in Hollywood and thanked everyone who helped him get to where he is today. He also shared the spotlight on his boundary-breaking collaborators, including Niecy Nash, Matthew Bomer, and Jeremy Pope.

Lowlights

Sloppy telecast

Many Golden Globe winners had to be seated at the back of the ballroom. This meant that each time a winner’s name was called out, they had to take a long walk up to the stage before they could give their acceptance speech. The lengthy trek from back-of-the-room seating seemed unnecessary and took away precious time from the award ceremony.

Chloe Flower playing people off

Flower’s musical cues during the Golden Globes 2023 ceremony created an awkward silence in some moments, with celebrities being left speechless and unsure if they should stop speaking or keep going. Some argued that while it was meant to keep things moving along, Flower’s timing made it seem like she didn’t care about honoring each awardee’s moment in full.

It ran long

The show ran significantly longer than expected due to long speeches from some Golden Globes winners. It’s past 11 P.M. EST and Salma Hayek and Harvey Guillén are still doing schtick? What a night!

Social Media Reactions

The Golden Globes 2023 Awards was a night of great anticipation and excitement. All eyes were glued to their screens as they waited to find out who the Golden Globe winners 2023 would be, and after it was all said and done, social media lit up with reactions from fans all over the world.

Fans flocked to Twitter and other social media platforms to express their reactions and discuss their favorite moments from the night. Some viewers chose to focus on congratulating winners for their achievements, while others shared how they felt about the speeches given by various celebrities throughout the night.

There were also plenty of humorous memes created in response to multiple funny moments during the show. One of these is Jamie Lee-Curtis being euphoric about Michelle Yeoh’s best actress win. Fans were also talking on Twitter about how Quinta Brunson cut off her speech because she saw Brad Pitt in the audience.

All these reactions prove that no matter what happens, good or bad, there’s always something to celebrate and laugh about when it comes to Golden Globes 2023 award show season!

The Future of the Golden Globes

The Golden Globes are an important part of the entertainment industry that has been around for 80 years. Despite recent controversy, it remains a popular awards show, with millions of viewers each year.

To remain relevant, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) must address issues of racism and inclusion to keep up with the changing standards of society. With a focus on progress and improvement, the Golden Globes could maintain its presence in the film and television industry for many years to come.
