Mark Edward Fischbach, known by his online alias Markiplier, is an American YouTube personality, brand owner, podcast host, and film director.
Early in his life, Fischbach met co-creators Wade Barnes and Bob Muyskens, who became lifetime friends and collaborators.
In 2012, the influencer went through major life issues, including an emergency appendectomy and an adrenal tumor. After thinking his life through, Fischbach realized he wanted to do something new—content creation. So, he registered and launched his Markiplier YouTube channel in the same year.
Fischbach initially planned to upload comedy sketches and action videos. He registered his channel under the Markiplier handle, a portmanteau of “Mark” and “multiplier,” as he would be portraying all his sketches’ characters.
Additionally, Fischbach also holds an interest in video games. Hence, he also opted for gaming content, especially as the gaming industry has gained increasing traction over the years. His first series, Let’s Play of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, became a hit.
Earning over a thousand subscribers, Fischbach expected to monetize his content through the YouTube AdSense Program. Unfortunately, he encountered problems with his AdSense account, preventing him from earning money. As a solution, Fischbach got rid of his first channel and moved to his current channel Markiplier, originally “markiplierGAME,” and continued uploading content.
Following an incident with his home buddies and fellow YouTubers Cyandago, Fischbach went on a one-month hiatus from September to October 5, 2015. Shortly after returning, he reached 10M subscribers.
Aside from YouTube content creation, Fischbach hosts several podcasts, directs his YouTube Originals series, and co-owns the clothing company CLOAK.
As of this writing, Markiplier has 35.4M subscribers on YouTube, 13.9M followers on Twitter, 11.7M on Instagram, 6.7M on TikTok, and 3.6M on Facebook.

The Awkward Silence
Ad Council’s ‘Seize The Awkward’ campaign produced The Awkward Silence video that brought together prominent influencers, including Fischbach himself, to address and empower teens and young adults to reach out for help with regard to their mental health.
Spotify Exclusive Video Partnership
Earlier in 2023, the influencer signed an exclusive video partnership with the giant audio streaming company Spotify for his “Distractible” and “Go! My Favorite Sports Team” podcasts. The video episodes of the podcasts will only be available on Spotify.
