Who is Minecraft?
Minecraft is a sandbox game that was developed by Mojang Studios back in 2011. It was created by Markus "Notch" Persson in the Java programming language. There were several private testing versions that took place, and it was first made public in May 2009 before it was fully released in November 2011. Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time, with over 238 million copies sold and almost 140 million monthly active players as of 2021.
The past decade has been witness to the explosion of Minecraft on social media, with parodies, adaptations, merchandise, and the annual Minecon conventions held regularly. This game has also been utilized for educational purposes, to teach chemistry, computer science, and computer-aided design. In 2014, Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property were purchased by none other than Microsoft for a whooping US$2.5 billion. There were several spin-offs that have been made. These include Minecraft Earth, Minecraft Story Mode, Minecraft Dungeons, and Minecraft Legends.
It has 11.4 million YouTube subscribers, 7.2 million Twitter followers, 12 million Facebook followers, 9 million Instagram followers, and 2.4 million TikTok followers. Some of its prominent collaborations are with Lacoste, Aape, and PUMA.
