Egypt’s iconic Pyramids of Giza, one of the world’s most celebrated historical sites, are about to undergo a massive $51 million renovation. The move comes after growing frustration among tourists over overcrowding, aggressive vendors, poor site management, and troubling reports of animal mistreatment.

Despite their undeniable allure and historic significance, the Giza Pyramids have faced mounting online criticism in recent years. While millions visit the site each year, many have left disappointed, with social media filled with posts about unpleasant experiences. Complaints about chaotic conditions, disorganized tours, and mistreated animals have steadily tarnished the reputation of this ancient wonder.

In response to the backlash, Orascom Pyramids Entertainment Services Company is leading an ambitious project to revamp the area. The goal is not only to improve the tourist experience but also to protect the cultural and historical integrity of the site for future generations.

One of the biggest changes visitors will notice is the introduction of 45 electric buses, which will operate across the Giza Plateau every five minutes. These environmentally friendly vehicles are expected to ease congestion, reduce emissions, and offer a more orderly way to move around the sprawling site.

Beyond transportation, major upgrades are planned for several key areas. Restoration efforts will focus on historic tombs, aiming to preserve and showcase the rich heritage that draws millions to Giza each year. The visitor center will also be completely renovated, with modern amenities and improved informational displays to give tourists a deeper understanding of the site’s significance.

Another major improvement is the launch of a new online ticketing system. This is intended to streamline entry, reduce long wait times, and better manage the flow of visitors, helping to address the chronic overcrowding that has plagued the Pyramids in recent years.

Animal welfare is also a major part of the overhaul. Following alarming reports by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), who documented widespread mistreatment of horses and camels at the site, authorities are pledging reforms. The investigation revealed shocking instances of animals being whipped, starved, and in some cases, abandoned after death near the tourist gates.

Jason Baker, PETA Asia’s Vice President, criticized the current conditions, stating, “The Pyramids of Giza should symbolize Egypt’s beauty and history—not unchecked animal abuse. The Egyptian government must act to remove these suffering animals from Giza.”

Recognizing the urgent need for change, the revamp includes measures to promote animal welfare and regulate the use of animals for tourist rides. Authorities have also proposed relocating vendors and small businesses operating at the site to a designated zone, away from the main tourist paths.

Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris, who is behind the renovation project through his companies Orascom Telecom Holding and Orascom Investment Holding, addressed resistance from some vendors. On X (formerly Twitter), he emphasized that the public good and preservation of national treasures must take precedence. “The well-being of the public and preservation of this treasure is far more important than catering to the interests of 2,000 individuals who have caused harm to the country for years,” Sawiris stated.

The $51 million revamp represents a crucial step toward restoring the grandeur and dignity of the Giza Pyramids, while ensuring a more respectful, safe, and organized experience for visitors. Officials hope that these improvements will not only protect Egypt’s invaluable heritage but also rejuvenate global interest in the site.

With better infrastructure, modernized facilities, and a renewed commitment to ethical tourism, the Pyramids of Giza are set to offer a much more positive experience — honoring both their ancient legacy and the expectations of today’s travelers.
