Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith were spotted together for the first time since the actor’s infamous Oscar slap incident. The couple was seen leaving the Nobu restaurant in Malibu over the weekend. Smith was all smiles for the cameras with a peace sign, while his wife Jada could be seen right behind.
Both had a laid-back look as the Oscar winner donned a navy polo tee with a matching baseball cap. Jada also kept it lowkey wearing a black jumpsuit, some hoop earrings, a pair of classic Aviator sunglasses, and a flannel shirt tied to her waist.
The whole world was shocked when Will Smith went up on stage and smacked Chris Rock on television for millions to see. Those present at the Academy Awards initially thought it was staged until Smith started throwing profanity at the comedienne, telling him “to keep his wife’s name out of his f****ng mouth.”
This came after Chris Rock joked about The Redtable host’s shaved hairstyle, and that she would be perfect to be the next G.I. Jane. Rock was not aware that Jada suffers from alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss.
The Public Apology
Smith has long since publicly apologized for his behavior stating, “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.”
He went on to apologize to Chris, saying he was out of line and he was wrong. Smith was embarrassed and said his actions were not indicative of the man he wanted to be. He said there is no place for violence in the world that should be full of love and kindness.
His last message was for the Academy, the producers of the show, the attendees, and everyone watching all over the world. He also apologized to the Williams family and his King Richard family. Smith said he deeply regretted that his behavior has stained what should have been a gorgeous journey for all of them. He ended his statement by saying he is a work in progress.
Hollywood’s Divided Opinions
Will Smith vehemently denied his wife’s role in his actions. He insisted he acted on his own accord and Jada had nothing to do with it. But Hollywood celebrities had mixed opinions about the matter since Will was seen laughing with the audience after Chris Rock made the joke. Then suddenly changed his demeanor when he saw her roll her eyes in dismay.
Actress and director Sophia Bush tweeted about the incident saying that “Violence isn’t okay. Assault is never the answer.” Mia Farrow came to Chris Rock’s defense with her tweet, “It was just a joke. Jokes are what Chris Rock does. Always has been edgy. That was a mild joke for him and I love G.I. Jane.”
On the other hand, actress and comedienne Tiffany Haddish felt otherwise, and said during her interview at the Oscars, “I’ve seen a man stand up for his wife, which we don’t see that much anymore. That made me have hope.”
Chris Rock’s Family Reacts
As expected, Chris Rock’s family was upset about what happened. Rock’s younger brother Tony who’s also an actor and comedian has been very vocal about his feelings about the incident. He says that he is not satisfied with the public apology Will Smith made on Instagram for smacking his older brother at the Oscars. Tony fully rejects it until Smith does a proper and genuine apology to Chris. He knew how humiliated he must have felt, being slapped right in front of millions of people to see. Furthermore, he insisted that Chris was merely doing his job.
Moreover, you can leave it to Chris Rock’s mom to say all the things that needed to be said about the Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith incident. During an interview when asked about how she felt about what happened, she said, “When Will slapped Chris he slapped all of us, but he slapped me..because when you hurt my child you hurt me.”
When asked what she would tell Will if she saw him Rose Rock said, “Oh my God I have no idea what I would say other than what in the world were you thinking, because you did a slap but so many things could have happened..you didn’t think. You reacted to your wife giving you the side eye, yeah. And you went up and you made her day because she was bowled over laughing when it happened.”
Jada Smith Entanglement
Another point people were trying to make is that Will Smith was mad about his wife being humiliated on national television. But isn’t that what his wife did to him when she opened up about her marital problems and her so-called ‘entanglement’ with Tupac? What did Jada say about Will and Tupac, which was much less humiliating compared to the mild joke Chris blurted out on stage?
Indeed, the Will Smith Red Carpet Oscars 2022 was unforgettable. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are not expected to be seen for a long time as the actor has been banned from attending the Academy Awards for the next 10 years. The Oscar winner has also handed in his resignation from the Academy following the incident. But seeing the couple come out of their shell gives us hope that things will turn out fine.
